Marshall Mill regeneration project (Studio E) in Leeds by Lu Xu

Leeds is famous for its industrial history, but nowadays it is in decline. However, there are some precious memories. I hope to set up a modern manufactural industry to regenerate the memory of the past.

After researching some mill buildings, I discovered that Marshall Mill, located in the Holbeck inner-city area, is really special. There is a gap for development between the city centre and Holbeck. Moreover, Marshall Mill and the old flax store are situated in the same site and they both have the regeneration demand. Therefore, I choose this site to complete my project.

Before coming to the UK, I heard that the bars here are very famous and a part of people's lives. Meanwhile, reading some articles about the history of beer I found that governments had always advised citizens not to drink too much alcohol which is harmful to our physical and mental health. However, they encouraged people to drink beer because of its lower alcoholic strength.

Besides, the brewery set up in the site now has extension demand. And there is also some distinct memory related to beer for different people in Leeds. In my opinion, it is really worth regenerating these buildings and including some related functions such as a museum and library which can educate people about its industrial history.
