Urban design project one – Citizens and the resilient city

PGT Blog11 February 2022

Tutor: Dr Doina Petrescu

Teaching Assistant: Andrew R Belfield

Excerpt from the studio brief: As a response to the current social, environmental and economic crises, urban communities across the world are starting initiatives based on resilience and mutual support. Citizens do not wait anymore for the governments' actions, which are too slow and insufficient to respond to the urgency of the problem.

Citizens are coming together to co-produce, co-manage, and share resources, time, knowledge, information and support based on care, solidarity and reciprocity rather than immediate economic profit. These initiatives concern local food and green energy production, recycling, community forestry, local services.

Very often, caring for the planet, for the city as well as for ourselves coincides with these actions. The studio will address issues of resilience, care, degrowth, eco-commoning, energy transition, environmental governance, circular economy and climate justice and will study and collaborate with a number of initiatives from Sheffield. In this specific context, the studio will propose a methodology that can be further adapted in other contexts, all over the world.
