Urban design tools and methods module

PGT Blog20 December 2021

The module explored various mapping, documentation and analysis techniques across the nodes and transects of neighbourhoods of Sheffield, with the help of one or more of the following themes: Ecologies of infrastructural care flows of distribution and consumption, commons and threshold spaces.

Each of them served as a lens to build a narrative of the precinct and to understand the city through varied perspectives. The lens initiated an enquiry into a wide array of the issues, concepts and phenomena of the urban realm, using the urban design tools and methods that were introduced every week. Walkability, safety, recreational spaces, communities inhabiting the neighbourhoods, urban edges, public spaces were some of the topics that were dealt with through the module.

The module constantly shifted the ways of seeing a site as a result of personal positions of situating, gathering information and observations, network and flow mapping methodologies and engaging with stakeholders.
