Urban design tools and methods module (2020)

PGT Blog23 April 2021

This is a core module for MAUD students in the first semester. Over the course of six weeks, the students have explored a set of areas in north Sheffield from an area called Shalesmoor to Hillsborough.

The module involves six lecture/seminar/workshop sessions and a research task performed which students are expected to complete in the field individually and in groups. Each session introduced a series of methodological approaches to urban design, both in terms of practical skills and theoretical grounding.

These include

  • mapping

  • surveying

  • writing

  • taking photos

  • holding meetings

  • critiquing

  • gathering data

Each student was tasked to practice a range of observational and representational methods that will enable them to engage with their site 'experientially', 'reflectively' and 'propositionally'. The intention of a tools-based approach early in the academic year is to introduce the course's approach to urban design and prepare students to design project-based learning.
